What is Catnip?

For cat owners, it can be entertaining to watch your cat go nuts over the exposure to catnip. But what exactly is it?

Catnip is a perennial herb from the mint family. It is commonly referred to as a weed as it can grow to 3 feet in height and has many branches with small clusters of purple flowers.

It contains a variety of aromatic oils including a mild hallucinogen called nepetalactone. This is the component that provides cat owners with some entertainment.

To have its effect, catnip must be inhaled by the cat. You can tell your cat is doing this when they pull their gums back from their teeth. It almost looks like they are smiling. The cat is actually pressing their tongue against the roof of their mouth. This results in the cat being able to concentrate the smell, resulting in a smell-taste effect.

Typical cat reactions are elation and arousal. You will see them rolling around appearing to be slightly intoxicated. The effects do not last long and you will not see a repeat effect for at least an hour with new exposure to catnip.

Not all cats have a reaction to catnip. According to a recent cat personality survey, about 80% of cat owners say they get a reaction to catnip.

What to do with a NEW Cat

When you get a new cat, there are a few key items to help the transition go smoothly.

The big thing is to know that cats do not like to travel. Never attempt to bring your cat home without a cat carrier.

If they are loose in the car, it is very possible they will freak out and cause an accident or scurry out the door or window at the first opportunity.

Once you arrive home, avoid letting the cat have free reign of the house. This can be overwhelming.

Instead, bring them into a bedroom and close the door. You should have all of their stuff in there as well...toys, litter box, scratch pad, etc.

Once they get settled in the room for a few days, you can introduce them to the rest of the home, including other pets.

Teach Your Dog to Come When Called

If you are one of those people that is envious of pet parents that can let their dogs loose without a leash and have them obey on command...be envious no more.

The first trick to allowing your dog to run free is teaching obedience. This starts with name recognition.

If you are going to have a dog that can run without a leash, they must come back to you on name command.

This can be accomplished by a few simple training techniques:

Practice calling your dogs name. When they come to you provide them with hugs, smiles, or a treat. This gives your pet positive reinforcement for coming to you.

When at a park or field, let them go without a leash. When you call their name, begin jogging in the opposite direction. Dogs have a difficult time resisting the chase.

While you are taking your dog on a walk, resist the desire to speak to them the whole time. Dogs will tune you out if they hear your voice constantly. Attempt to have a quiet walk, only speaking to them when you want them to take an action.

The key to training is making progressions. Just because you dog comes to you from the other room in the house, does not mean they will come to you in a busy park.

Take steps based on progression. Practice in the home, backyard, front yard or empty park BEFORE attempting to let them run free in a hectic environment.

As you see progress, advance to a larger, slightly more distracting arena. Before you know it, you will be the envy of someone else desiring to have a well behaved dog like yours.

A Cure for the Cat's Meow?

Cat's meow for a myriad of different reasons. It could be anything from saying hello to wanting to be fed. The key understanding behind your cats meow is simply that they want attention.

If you have a cat that can be quite demanding with theirs meows try this technique.

When your cat starts to meow, they want you to give them attention, so you need to teach them how to be patient.

As they begin to meow, ignore them until the meowing subsides. As soon as you get a quiet moment, go over to your cat and give them lots of love and attention.

When you walk away, if the meowing begins again, remain calm and quiet. This means don't yell stop. Wait for your cat to be silent. After a moment, provide them with more attention.

The idea is to teach the cat that they will get the attention they desire ONLY when they are calm and quiet. With a little time and consistency, this does work.

There are some cats that simply do not get enough attention. If you are away for long periods of time during the day, your cat may be over craved with desire to be played with, which can produce excessive meowing.
